School Location

Brentwood Elementary School is located in the northwest community of Brentwood, just a few kilometers from the downtown core of the city. Brentwood School is the proud home of two programs. The majority of students attend our alternative program - the "Traditional Learning Centre program". This program follows the Alberta Program of Studies and has a focus on direct instruction, critical thinking, and character education. The program utilizes core resources that are common to all TLC programs in the CBE. French as a Second Language is provided through a locally developed curriculum, in grades one to three. Beginning in Grade 4 students follow the Alberta Program of Studies, French as a Second Language curriculum. Brentwood School has a strong music program with specialist music teachers, beginning in Kindergarten and band becomes the music program beginning in Grade 5. Students attending our Traditional Learning Centre program come from northwest communities in sectors 1 and 2 of the City of Calgary or Area 1 of the Calgary Board of Education. The Traditional Learning Centre program at Brentwood currently serves students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Grade 7 and 8 students are located at Thomas B. Riley Junior High School. For a detailed list of communities we serve regarding the Traditional Learning Program, please see Alternative Programs, Traditional Learning Centre at Brentwood under General Information. Brentwood School also houses a system Communication, Sensory and Social Interaction (CSSI) program for students residing generally in the northwest or near northeast quadrants of the city. This is one of several similar programs offered by the Calgary Board of Education throughout the city. These students have all been identified as having severe needs according to Alberta Education criteria, primarily due to diagnosis of severe forms of autism. Placement into this program is made through referral to the Autism Team specialists in Student Services, located in Parkdale Centre. All of these students have Individual Program Plans which include learning readiness, life skills, early academic, fine and gross motor, speech and/or language, and behavioural/social goals. These students form 2 learning groups which sometimes work together and integrate into whole school activities when appropriate.

About the School

The two-storey school was built in 1963 and is situated on 9.64 acres. This allows for a large school yard with baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a relatively new creative playground and a compound area, marked with a variety of games. The school currently has 30 classes of students , a computer lab, music room, library, and two gymnasia. A large naturalized "Green Garden" area serves as an outdoor instructional area. Children eat lunch in the small gymnasium and in the east lunchroom area. The Communication and Behavior program has a combined lunchroom/playroom area with facilities appropriate for life skills programming and sensory motor activities.
