School Location

Capitol Hill School is located in the northwest quadrant of Calgary. It is a K - 6 school with approximately 180 students enrolled. The school serves the communities of Capitol Hill, Collingwood, Banff Trail and Charleswood and is located within the boundaries that include 14th street to the east, Crowchild Trail to the west, 16th avenue south and Northmount Drive to the north. The majority of the students live within walking distance. Thirty-five (62%) of the students do not reside within the Capitol Hill School catchment area and have chosen the school for its "Learning Through the Arts" Program, system special education classes and for its initimate and small school population of approximately 170 students. The on-site before and after school "Adventurers Child Care Program" and the Adventurers Kindergarten Enhancement Program are also appealing to Capitol Hill families. The community consists primarily of single family dwellings and some multi-family dwellings. More recently, the development of new homes is very attractive to families who enjoy the neighbourhood's central location, proximity to downtown, accessible shopping and, educational institutions such as the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the University of Calgary.

About the School

Capitol Hill School was built in 1950 and is situated on 3.9 acres. The school is a small-sized school which represents many communities that select Capitol Hill School for its intimate, warm and caring learning environment. It consists of 15 classrooms, library, gymnasium, music room, art room, and computer laboratory. A half day CBE morning kindergarten program and an afternoon Kindergarten Enhancement Program give families the opportunity to attend a full day kindergarten program. Two beautiful naturalization parks, located on the southeast corner of the school and front of the school, align with our environmental projects. At Capitol Hill School, we celebrate a diverse school population characterized by the following statistics. Our students represent 14 different languages and cultures. This diversity represents 29 students or 16.5 % of the total population. The school includes two CBE special education programs. These include the Training in Attitude, Skills, and Communication (TASC) Program and a Bridges Program (Behavior Adaptation Therapy) for Division 1 students. Hence, students at Capitol Hill School are empowered by the CBE ends statement of "citizenship," where each student has the opportunity to be an informed and involved member of his or her local, national and global communities. A recent rejuvenation of the school's technology program includes a dual platform of both PC and MacIntosh computers to include a fully wired school combined with a wireless network with internet access. A new and modern server allows for access to e-mail, current research and the internet. The intranet supports student learning. A CDD server accommodates videography and digital photography as the school embraces "technology as an art form" through its artist in residence program. Capitol Hill School is a LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS school.
