About the School

Connaught School is one of the original sandstone buildings in Calgary and presently has the distinction of being the oldest operating school in the system. Connaught School was built in 1911 on 3.24 acres at a cost of $98,000, plus $18,000 for plumbing and heating. In 1912, the doors of Connaught School were opened to accommodate the increasing population of the Beltline area.

In 1920, four new classrooms were added to the auditorium on the third floor. As junior high was added, more space was needed for physical education so the current gymnasium was added in 1952.

Connaught also has the distinction of being granted the first home and school charter in Western Canada. This group, originally known as the "Mothers' Club" was organized in 1913. This proud tradition continues today with the Connaught Community School Council.

Connaught School is Kindergarten to Grade 6 school, thriving in the heart of the inner city. Our learning environment is diverse as many of our children come from countries around the world. There are currently 36 different language groups, including English. We have a full day kindergarten program and strong literacy programs to support multi lingual learners. As well as the regular curricular programs, Connaught students have access to a lunch program, a before- and after-school program, and an after-school activity program. Decidedly Jazz Danceworks has been in residence since 1994, offering classes, performances and scholarships to our students. The Calgary Board of Education is proud to support Connaught as a Centre of Excellence for English as a Second Language. We are closely alligned with the System ESL Team and work together to develop outstanding practices and outcomes for multilingual learners. We work with students in multi-aged learning environments that currently utilize 6 classrooms, a gymnasium, library, music room, and two computer labs. Each classroom has computers networked with the Calgary Board of Education server. The playground, which also serves the community, includes a creative playground, playing fields and a large concrete games area.

We have a unique and successful business partnership with Conoco Phillips Inc., based on the belief that literacy is the foundation for success in all facets of life. Employees are involved with the staff, parents, and students at Connaught School during their work day. They can be found either writing and editing with the grade 5/6's, reading with the grade 1, 2 and 3's, working in the Kindergarten or exchanging letters with their penpals in grade 4/5. The partnership won the Mayor's Award for Partnership Excellence for "Excellence in Curriculum Enhancement and Development" in 1997 and the year 2000. In September, 2004 Connaught became an ESL Center of Teaching and Learning.
