About the School

Jennie Elliott School is a dynamic learning community that is characterized by academic excellence, the building of responsible student behavior and strong partnerships with families. Students are both challenged and nurtured to develop their own learning strengths and are constantly encouraged to take on leadership roles within the classroom and school at large. Teachers, support staff and administration recognize the importance of ongoing focused professional development to ensure that all students receive quality instruction in all areas of their learning.

Although the school was initially built in 1962, significant renovations were made and additions added during the 1970's. Today this large two storey school has 20 classrooms for Kindergarten through Six, plus two TASC classes for students with severe disabilities. Kindergarten is offered in both the morning and the afternoon.

In addition to having large well equipped classrooms with computers, the school has a very spacious technology centre/ library and an extensive collection of both narrative and expository text. The art and music program are well supported and each is in a self-contained classroom. The physical education program is taught by a specialist who also ensures that a quality intramural program runs during the lunch hour. The physical structure of the school allows excellent opportunities for large group Learning Celebrations and Assemblies, as well as quiet areas for small group instruction and resource work.

At the present time, the school is working towards accreditation as a Programme International School. The tenets of this program are academic rigor, foundational knowledge, integration of technology to support learner achievement, structured critical inquiry, global connections to learning and strong attention to the development of respectful and responsible students. The school site itself is very large (6.36 acres) and is equipped with an expansive creative play centre, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and courtyard areas. Students enjoy these play areas during their fifteen minute morning recess and one hour lunchbreak.

Jennie Elliott School offers a well supervised lunch program for both bussed and walking students. After finishing their lunch, a broad range of clubs are offered , inclusive of French, Spanish, computers, intramurals, choir, handbells, leadership, CanWest Spelling, crafts and art. All students are encouraged to join these activities or to come forward with new ideas for clubs that could be offered. While some of the school clubs are purely for student interst, others have a strong service component. These 'working clubs' inlcude library helpers, patrols, gym helpers, TASC buddies (support for students with severe disabilities), lunchroom and school leadership.

There is a privately run Before-and-After School Care Program in the school that also caters to Kindergarten children attending school for half-a-day. Services are available to parents from 7:30 am until 6:00 pm, on non-student school days and during the summer months. One of the defining elements of the school is the level of parent participation in the classrooms and the school as a whole. Parents are highly valued members of our learning community - students, teachers, administration and parens are our collaborative team.
