School Location

The school is located in Castleridge, a community with a rich spectrum of cultural diversity. All of our students live in Castleridge and most walk to school - we have no busing. Our multi-ethnic profile includes 20-30% English speaking families and a majority of 70-80% families speaking languages other than English in the home. Within our ESL population the largest cultural group are East Indian who speak Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi. We have smaller but increasing percentages coming from countries in the Middle East, the Pacific Rim, South America and Africa as well as First Nations families. Our families speak over 20 different home languages. A majority of our students are learning English as a Second Language. We are close enough to use Prairie Winds Park as an activity site for outdoor activities throughout the year. Our small but supportive School Council supports regular artist-in-residency programs and off site field trips to enhance our school program. Our diversity constitutes both a challenge and a cultural learning opportunity for all our students. We have adopted The Virtues Project school-wide and staff, students and parents work together to maintain a positive, safe and caring learning environment, with an emphasis on respect, responsibility and citizenship.

About the School

The school was built in 1983 and is situated on 12.0 acres. It has 14 permanent classrooms, 9 re-locatable classrooms and additional instructional spaces in the library and on the stage. With approx. 520 students we are at capacity. Our class sizes are 1:20 in K-2 and 25:1 in gr. 3-6. We have a wonderful library with a brand new book collection and 12 on-line library research stations. We also have a music room and a large double gymnasium with a stage. O.S. Geiger is a technology rich school. Technology infusion is supported through a server-based environment, 83 web-enabled PC computers, 3 interactive SMART Boards, multiple software packages including text-speech along with a set of laptops, digital cameras and LCD projectors. Multimedia workstations are organized into pods within each classroom. We want our students to be physically active so we make daily use of our two creative playgrounds, three large soccer fields and baseball diamond.
