School Location

Sir James Lougheed School is located in the southwest community of Rutland Park, serving the communities of Lincoln Park Redevelopment and Rutland Park. Students from Sir James Lougheed School move on to A.E. Cross School for Grades 7 to 9 and then on to Central Memorial High School.

We are in the process of community engagement to address the issue of declining enrolment in the regular program at both Sir James Lougheed and Killarney. The proposal presented to trustees would see Sir James Lougheed as the site for regular program beginning September 2009.

About the School

The school was built in 1957 and is situated on 6.11 acres. Sir James Lougheed serves over 80 Kindergarten to Grade 6 students mainly from the Rutland Park community. Five homerooms are organized in self-contained classrooms with multiaged grade groupings in Division I and II. Our Kindergarten is a half-day program operating Monday through Friday mornings. French is offered in Grades 3-6. We also have a music program and English as a Second Language teacher. There are computers and smart boards in every classroom as well as a centralized Computer Lab in our Library.

Our school has a number of new students this year, almost one half of our population. Many of these students are from different cultures and countries. This adds to the richness of our community as we have fifteen first language groups in our population.

Our excellent academic program is enhanced by a diverse extra-curricular program offered before school and at noon. This year Student Leadership, Intramurals, Guitar Club, Word Fest, Spirit Days, Swimming Lessons, Hip-Hop Dance Residency, Curling Lessons for grades 3 - 6. African Dance and Drumming Artist In Residency, David Bouchard, as well as various guest speakers and field trips.

The teaching staff is composed of a principal/resource teacher and five full-time teachers. Our support staff includes a full-time Administrative Assistant and a Facility Operator, two educational assistants, a part-time library assistant, and one Lead Lunch and one Lunch Room Supervisor.
