About the School

This beautiful and historic school was built in 1919 and celebrated its 85th anniverary in 2004. The school is one of the historic buildings that has been featured by Open Doors Calgary. There are seven classroom spaces with two forming a double area where the Kindergarten and a Grade 1/ 2 class are located. The school has a gymnasium and a bright, well-resourced library and computer lab. The sunny, cheerful indoor courtyard is used for learning activities and family gatherings.

Three naturalized areas highlight the outdoor space. Riverstone Park, Prairie Patch and Aspen Woodland were developed between 1998 and 2002 and represent the flora and geography of Alberta. Children are frequently observed in these areas involved in creative play activities inspired by their surroundings. A large Creative Playground was constructed in June 2004.

All children are welcomed. Diversity is respected and celebrated. The professional staff has been inspired by the work and philosophy of schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy that recognizes the needs of the whole child, academic, emotional, physical and spiritual. Children construct and refine knowledge as they discover more about themselves and the world. An energetic, creative teaching staff facilitates the implementation of this philosophy of teaching and learning. Children are encouraged and supported in following their interests and passions through project based learning opportunities. A mentoring program teams older children with younger ones, promoting peer teaching and enhancing the family feeling in the school. A Grandparent Reading Program runs in the library every Wednesday afternoon. Artist-in-Residence programs build the skills and proficiency of both children and staff. The artists working in the school this year are visual artist, Adrienne Adams, and musical artist Laurie Montemurro. There is a possibility that we will also work with a dancer.

The school offers a Lunch Program and the YMCA runs a before and after school care program for Kindergarten to Grade 6.
