About the School

West View School services residents of the Calgary Young Offender Centre and its affiliate programs.

West View School is a year round Calgary Board of Education school that contracts service to Alberta Justice. The school serves only those Alberta residents who are placed in the Calgary Young Offender Centre (C.Y.O.C.) and its affiliate satellite programs. The centre operates under the administration of the Correctional Services Division (Alberta Justice) and is designed to accommodate approximately 170 young persons ranging in age from 12 to 18. Residents come from various locations in the province and include both males and females who are in temporary detention, remanded, or sentenced to secure custody by order of Provincial Youth Court.

The school, with its satellite programs, employs 20 teachers, 2 Education Assistants, a Career Practitioner, a Library Technician, a Justice Liaison Worker, a School Secretary/Office Assistant, and an Administrative Secretary, and is accredited by Alberta Education. Academic continuity can be maintained for junior high and high school students while in custody. It is possible for students to complete Alberta graduation requirements for a high school diploma in that a wide range of academic and career technology studies courses are offered. Resident students may also take post secondary courses through distance learning opportunities provided by other Alberta institutions.

West View School, in partnership with A.A.D.A.C. and Enviros, offers a treatment/school program for youth with addiction issues. The program operates out of the Enviros Base Camp which is located in the Waiporous Creek forestry reserve. Two teachers, who reside at the camp, provide a comprehensive school program to the resident youth.

West View School, in partnership with Enviros, A.A.D.A.C. and the Alberta Solicitor-General, provides the educational program at the ExCEL Discovery Program. The ExCEL Discovery Program provides a therapeutic and educational environment programming for adolescents serving open custody status. The school program is based within the group home setting and a teacher works holistically with group home staff to address educational and treatment needs as the youth transition back to the community.

In contract and collaboration with the Solicitor General and the Calgary Young Offender Centre, two West View school teachers, as of Novermber 2009, have been providing an educational program at the Youth Attendance Centre to sudents who have been involved in the Youth Criminal Justice System. The program offers academic courses, life-skills curriculum (non-graded curriculum), work experience and community support services to high school students who have had limited success in traditional school settings and who are in need of a highly structrured environment with a low teacher/pupil ration.
